17 years

Three months before your 17th birthday you can apply for your provisional licence – or as soon as you are 16, if you’re disabled and receiving mobility allowance. Then once you’re 17, you can legally drive a car on public roads in the UK.

provisional driving licence

Before you learn to drive, you must apply for a provisional driving licence. You can apply for your provisional driving licence by completing the DL1 application form which is available from main Post Office branches or MOT test centres.

Check your eyes

Check if you can read a vehicle registration plate from 20.5 metres away (contact lenses and glasses are fine). Perhaps you need to have a check-up at your opticians to make sure.
